If your image is too dark

Face a window, lamp or other soft light source. Avoid having a bright window or light directly behind you — the camera exposes for the bright background and your face falls into shadow.

If moving is not an option, raise exposure manually in iContact Control. Expect the background to blow out; that is the trade you are making.

If your image is too bright

Move strong lights further away or reduce their brightness. A light too close to your face will blow out highlights that no setting can recover.

If the brightness keeps shifting during a call

Automatic exposure is re-reading the scene — usually because something in frame is changing, or your main light is uneven. Set exposure manually in iContact Control and it will hold steady.

If your colours look wrong rather than the brightness

Mixed light — daylight from a window plus a warm lamp — confuses automatic white balance. Turn one of them off, or set white balance manually.

If you see faint grey bands drifting down the picture

Look for subtle grey bands moving slowly down the image — easiest to spot against a plain wall or a light shirt, and often only noticeable once someone points it out. If the picture is visibly flashing or dropping out instead, that is a different problem entirely.

The cause is your lighting. Artificial light pulses at your mains frequency, and when the camera's shutter is slightly out of step with it you get these slow bands. It disappears in daylight.

Match the camera to your mains frequency: 50Hz in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, 60Hz in North America. The setting sits in the iContact Control App, and most meeting and camera apps carry the same anti-flicker or powerline-frequency option if you would rather set it there.

If the bands persist on both settings, switch off one light at a time — an older or dimmable LED can pulse at a frequency neither setting matches.

Fix the light before the setting

Start with automatic and make small adjustments only if needed. Fixing the light does more than fixing the setting, and it keeps working when you move or the time of day changes.
